Wow. At this point, "if you're reading this it's too late" for me to recant and decide not to share my 3 months long project. TTBD's FIRST EVER VLOG is now live on YouTube. The first series is all about my first visit to UpTown With RR, a local #thrift shop here in Jackson, MS. I learned about the business from a friend and decided to check out their collection on instagram @uptownwithrr, where they post items from the store available for shipping nationwide. Before I recap more on the trip... Disclaimer: This is not a sponsored post or vlog. I paid for all of my items with my own, hard earned cash.
When I walked through the doors of Uptown With RR, I immediately felt like I'd found another extension of my tribe. Randy, the owner, is extremely warm and welcoming and his inventory is legitimately amazing. No matter what decade you've fallen in love with, there's something for you. It's like a candy shop with dazzling colors, great quality fabrics, and obscure pieces lining its racks. I spent a good hour combing through the sequins and silk and blazers and bell bottoms. It was nostalgic seeing the throwback windbreakers, like the ones my family wore during road trips to Six Flags, peplum dresses like the ones my aunties wore to prom, and secretarial tops like the ones my Gramma wore to her desk job when my mom was a kid. I felt like I was time traveling as I tried on each garment.
For those who don't know me very well, I LOVE THRIFTING. It's one of my mom and I's favorite pastime (much to my older brothers' chagrin... LOL). We've been known to just gas up her car and take 3 hour long excursions, touring nearby 3+ Goodwills from Memphis,TN and Hernando, MS. Most of my most complimented clothing came from "The Will," as my mom always says, or consignment shops from around the world.
The purpose of these posts is give insights to benefits of thrifting. Besides the fact that thrifting is better on the pockets and the environment, the vintage clothing you find in thrift store and consignment shops are often is superb condition. Why? The craftsmanship and textiles used in older clothing and shoes is unrivaled by the mass-produced fashion of today and yesteryear. Don't get me wrong, I love a good trench from Old Navy and pant from Banana Republic (again, none of the blogs or vlogs are sponsored), but the tops you buy from any 50+ location strong store is likely to tear, stretch out of shape, or get dingy in your washer/dryer after 3 good wears. Let's face it, the manufacturers of these products don't expect these items to withstand the test of time. The goal is get us to fond over every 2 second long trend, buy buy buy all of the things, wear the garments and shoes once, maybe 3 times, then repeat. These items have a short lifespan in most people's closets, are eventually donated or forgotten in the dark crevices of their closets, and get replaced by more items that will endure the same fate. I'm guilty of it too.
All of that to say this, thrifting is like house hunting and paying for the beachside condo the amount you used to pay for your matchbox sized, studio apartment downtown. You invest a little money up front with a big pay off. You have the luxury of paying less for more, as in more bang for your buck.
Most of the inventory at Uptown With RR was marked between $2-$15; I purchased a total of 9 items for a whopping $65.88! Throughout this 2 part Vlog Series, you'll get a full look at what I purchased in vivid detail. There's even an opportunity for you to vote on your favorite styling of a top I bought.
I have a very quirky sense of style, so many of the items are not your typical "street wear" or day-to-day "get up." Some pieces are motivation for me to actually get out more. A few just invoke a lot of fun and whimsy.
Thanks for reading.
